The first phone from HTC that I bought was the Sensation XE. What got me to buy it instead of the Samsung Galaxy SII was the Sense UI. I had a Samsung Wave S8500 before and I kind of liked it but after some time got bored with its TouchWiz UI. Although the screen was great, I found it was not to my taste. When I got to fiddle with my HTC Sensation XE, on the other hand, things got interesting. I liked the eye candy and the integration of  contacts that go deeper than the UI. But one thing that got me worrying was the battery life.

During the first week of usage I noticed a steep decrease in battery level. The phone won't even last the entire day on a single charge. Since it's the first time I got an HTC phone, I thought it was only normal. I went to a lot of sites for the SE and found out that a lot of other users also had the same feedback regarding battery life. I tinkered with the phone after coming home from work one night and found something interesting. There were a lot of connections that I think were hogging the battery. I removed all the possible connections from the settings > location by unchecking all the boxes. After that I observed the battery drain for the next few days. Unchecking all the abovementioned increased battery life noticeably. The phone now lasts up to more than two days with moderate use. But my quest for longer battery life did not end there.

Although the phone lasts more than two days, I noticed that it tended to drain faster while I was in the office or when I get home. When I'm outside the house and not in the office most of the time, the battery lasted longer. I found out on other sites that the online widgets and programs that require sync drain a lot of battery juice whenever there is an internet connection (i.e. wifi). I then opened settings > account and sync and found some stuff there that I don't use anyway (News and Stocks). After going to the task manager, I noticed that they sometimes appear there without me running them. Since I can't seem to remove those accounts, I tried the All tab in the task manager. And what luck...those stuff are there and with the option for me to disable them. I found out other stuff there too that I can disable so that I can manage what processes are running in the background. You can give it a try too if you want. This worked for me and now I'm not afraid of my phone dying on me while I have wifi active. And it prolonged my usage too. I hope this helps you guys.

Note: Don't worry about disabling processes in the task manager. What you disabled will still be on the list albeit on the bottom part (to separate the active from disabled ). I also don't know if it's just me but when I removed the battery widget the battery seemed to discharge slower.

Hey that sounds really good! Could you give a listing of things you switched off? I am an EXTREME newbie and have no clue what to turn off or not (ok, I can figure out the "stocks" thing ;-)).
I'll start having a look anyways, but some concrete apps to be shut down would really help me!
Thanks!

Don't use task managers. Do not disable any app, it will make your phone operate much slower.

If you have apps syn'd that you don't use, turn off the sync but don't disable the app.

Task killers, even the task killer app included on your Sensation, defeats the purpose. Most users think the task killer will free up RAM and make the phone operate faster, but the opposite is actually the case. The phone runs exactly what it needs. Many apps, including the ones you are convinced that need killing, are ported to the Android OS and will restart themselves, thus pulling resources. Other apps, having been killed, will take extra time to load when you next need them.

Let Android run the way it's designed to run. It will pull the files it needs and push the other to the back until it needs them again.

Indoors I turn Screen brightness all the way down.
I turn off all animations, minimize the eyecandy and turn off all haptic feedback.
I never sync anything, if i want to check something, I do it manually.
Same goes for WiFi, I only turn it on when I need it.

To improve battery life further replace the stock battery with e.g. the Anker 1900mAh.

As I have s-off and root access I have also flashed a custom kernel in which it is possible to tune the system further.

Here's a small list to consider:

Lower screen brightness
Turn off 4G, WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth when you don't need them
Change WiFi sleep policy to never
Disable WiFi and 4G network notifications
Disable "always on" mobile data
Turn off background data (syncing)
Turn off auto-sync
If you don't want to turn off auto-sync, change the auto-sync frequency (Weather, News, Stocks, Twitter, etc)
Lower the screen timeout interval
Manually turn off the screen when not in use
Disable wireless network location services when not needed
Turn off animations
Don't use live wallpapers
Use a dark static wallpaper
Monitor your running services (but don't use task killers)
Choose your home screen widgets carefully, or rather don't use any at all
Disable notification lights
Turn off phone vibration
Turn off haptic feedback
Turn off audible touch tones
