I'm a newbie on this but would like to root my phone to gain access to the additional settings in aps and amongst others be able to take backups of my game saves, aps ... The thing is i've read quite a few stickies including the one on the top but i'm still not 100% sure on what to do.

I've seen this "clockworkmod recovery" but there's no such thing in the android market. Only "rom manager"? Any difference? I want to root but only permanently if the 3rd option under the power button won't remove the root if i pick it. Right now the power button has 3 options. 1) Shut down, 2) flight mode, 3) reboot (clear temp files & fire up). so if i select option 3 and it doesnt remove the root then i don't need permanent.

I also will NOT be installing a custom rom, the default one is just fine for me. I just need / want root access. I also do NOT not want to wipe my current phone data, just gain root access.

There's so many so called "required" files that i don't know anymore wich ones i actually need and don't need. Below are the one's i've got. I also would like an easy step by step to unroot the phone in case i needed to but i can't find the stock rom. Can anyone find it for me? (that has dutch in it)

Things i've got:

* PG58IMG.zip (4.717 kB)
* recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-pyramid.img (4.618 kB)
* recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-pyramid.zip (1.665 kB)
* revolutionary-0.4pre4.zip (1.583 kB)
* revolutionary beta key
* su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed

Thing you need to find my stock rom?

Software n°: 1.73.401.4
Baseband version: 10.58.9035.00U_10.15.9035.02_2
build version: 1.73.401.4 CL161971 release-key

It may seem a bit daunting but the root procedure is rather straight forward once you've tried it.

-------------------
The "only" files you really need are:

revolutionary-0.4pre4.zip
unzip it on your pc

su-3.0.3.2-efghi-signed.zip
put this on your sdcard as is
find the file attached below

simultaneously run the revolutionary tool from your pc  and the revolutionary.io website
copy and paste the beta keys back and forth

you might have to run the revolutionary tool more than once
restart your phone and put the phone in HTC Sync mode every time before you run it

accept to install clockworkmod when it asks you (you can always flash another recovery later)

To unroot the phone is easy, you just run your stock rom, the RUU-file.exe

your stock rom is here:

Yes, they are two separate things, but ROM Manager is able to flash an updated clockworkmod for you if you choose to, it will also handle your backups

Has got nothing to do with it.

You will not lose root, but on the other hand you will not have root access either - you have to flash the superuser file after rooting. Superuser grants other apps root privileges

All your files will be intact.

OK should be easy enough. What do i need to do to flash the superuser to gain root access so i have maximum root options.

To flash the su-file.zip you boot into hboot
choose "recovery"
-------------------
<<< I like beer
-------------------
choose "- install zip from sdcard"
choose "-choose zip from sdcard"

locate the zip

flash it

you might have to do it more than once, repeat until succesful.

So if i understand you correctly it's like this.

1 run revolutionary to gain root  - Yes
2 boot into recovery and flash the su file to give apps root access. - Yes
3 done.  - Yes

Anything else? - No

It will only ask for the key once. If the tool finds that you are s-off it will skip to the next step, which is flashing a recovery.

So no need to have the site up when repeating.

That's what got me confused. That whole s-off thing. I recon that's what revolutionary does? Cause i know I'm not s-off atm. Only got the phone a little under a month ago. Since i don't plan on flashing a custom mod, could you type out the exact steps to root ly phone so both me and the apartment have root access? I'd be very grateful.

I just did all that above - explained it.
Run the revolutionary tool it will do the job for you.
--------------------------------------------
<<< I really could use a beer right now
--------------------------------------------
1. Download the tool to pc, unzip it into a folder
2. put the su-file.zip on the sdcard
3. open up website, revolutionary.io
    press the download button, as you already have the file cancel the download
4. connect the phone to pc, set in HTC Sync mode - disregard any error messages
5. run the revolutionary tool from pc, it will tell you some data
6. fill in the data on the website
7. copy the beta key from website back into the revolutionary tool

watch it do its job

if it fails to complete, restart the phone
put it in HTC Sync mode again, run the revolutionary tool from pc, no website necessary this time
accept to install a recovery (otherwise you will not be able to flash your su-file.zip later)
if succesful the tool will close without informing you

boot into hboot
choose recovery
flash the su-file.zip

done.

Reboot phone

test root access with any rooted tool
http://www.htcsensationforum.com/htc-sensation-rooting/rooted-non-rooted-downloadable-apps/

Superuser app should kick in and ask if you want to grant the app you are running root access

OK, see if i got it right. Unzip the revolution file, connect phone to PC in HTC sync mode, copy such zipfile to SD card root, run revo and let it do it's thing. Phone shroud be rooted with s-off. Do i need that super CIDD step I've seen some talk about. Can't flash now since I'm at work for another couple hours.

SuperCID is not needed, if you want to get OTA updates you shouldn't SuperCID

and to get OTA updates you also have to flash the stock recovery

Ota updates? Final question for now. The sensation xe phone is due for an upgrade to android 4 this month. If i root now, will root be lost if i upgrade when its out? I suppose it will be lost. Just want to make sure. I suppose that revo is compatible with Android 4 aswell if i will need to re-root.

You will not lose root, you'll just have to flash the su-file.zip again and you'll be good to go.

Revolutionary is NOT compatible with ICS

So I'd better root now, update when ready, reflash the zip and wait for an updated revolutionary that works with ICS. Got it. I'll let you know how the rooting worked out. Thanks for sticking with me with the small repetitive questions.

No, you don't get it.  Tongue

The Revolutionary tool does not support ICS hboot versions.

You have to root now, while still on GB, you flash a custom recovery and you flash superuser

next you flash stock recovery so you can update to ICS
update to ICS
then you flash a custom recovery
then you flash the su-file.zip again and you will have root access once more.

You do not need to wait for Revolutionary. You will be rooted without it.

Every time you want to check and get any OTA update make sure you have stock recovery on your phone.
